I am a writer, speaker, artist, and educator determined to change the ways we think about raising our kids and building community.

Some people describe the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic as “The Great Awakening.” It was certainly a time of awakening for me. Forced to quit my job teaching art at an elementary school, (which was surprisingly a lot more stressful than it sounds) I began to look more critically at my life and what brought me and my family the most value. I spent the first year of the pandemic developing and piloting an anti-racist homeschooling curriculum and finished my master’s in Education Research. (Oh - and gave birth to my third child.)

For many years I’ve devoured books on everything from childhood development to loneliness to anti-racist pedagogy and indigenous wisdom, and all the while I had a hard time reckoning the daily practices of the school environments where I worked with the research I was uncovering. So in 2021, I decided it was high time I shared more of this information with the other people in my life and began by posting daily to Instagram on my handle @JulietLearns

My biggest goal is to make my life my work. Some of the things I hope to see happen in my lifetime include a significant reduction in the amount of standardized testing in our schools, the opening of publicly funded self-directed schools, mandated parental leave for all families in the US, and a generational shift toward increased community care and support.

I am constantly growing in my effort to become a more conscious, creative, loving individual. Part of my mission is to share the lessons I’ve learned with others, through talks, writing, and seminars. I hope you will follow and support me and others on this journey.

Let’s get to work.
